Wood for Woodburners

I have brought a woodburner for the garage for when I'm doing my motorbike projects and have approached some factories near where I live to see if they are happy for me to take the pallets. Some have said yes and I took them away, cut them up and used them but they didnt last long. I refuse to pay £2 to £4 per bag for kindling from the local shops as they are pants and dont last long at all - one sack only lasted me 2 hours and yet cost me £4:mad:. Is there any other ways of getting free wood?

Pallets dont last long, free wood is hard to get as log burners are very common now. Prices of wood (logs) has shot up making it less economical to use a wood burner due to supply and demand0

I agree, I used to have a gas bottle heater - but the price of gas shot up three times to £55 per bottle refill so I wanted another option to save money. I use pallets as its easy to cut up, one pallet lasts me about 4 hours. Just wanted to know any other options i could do.0 -
You could ask on freecycle
dont burn wood with creosote, paint on though0 -

The problem with pallets is generally they're made with new wood and therefore burn very quickly. If you can chop them and store them, I think the term is "season" they will burn slower, although you do have to store them for quite a while. It may be worth you doing this if you have the space and you can get a continuous supply.0

Pallet wood is usually dry so seasoning wont make any difference its just the type of wood it is it burns quickly. Seasoning actually makes wood burn quicker as it allows access water to evaporate out of the wood0

Advertised on freegle website for some scrap wood I could have for my wood burner and a kind man from Derby who is rebuilding his house got in touch - I've just returned from him with a second load of scrap wood ready for burning. Im now sorted for about 6 months - just got to get busy with the chop saw and the axe! It was my first entry on freegle, used to use freecycle but the amount of begging and unrealistic wanteds (such as PSP) just peed me off. Now my garage will be nice and warm.......:j:T0

We have just purchased a leicence for our local woods to be able to collect logs from there the leicence cost £5.00 for the year.0

Can I ask where or who you apply to for a licence please?0

We had a real fire when I was growing up, and once a month (or as needed to refill the wood shed), we went round the local parks / countryside roads / common land to see if anyone had been choping wood down, and asking for rementants. Mum also placed an advert in the local village shop, asking for wood eg fencing, cutting / pruning a tree etc.
It was mainly the case of being flexible enough to go and collect it, and then chopping it up into suitable sizes.
Gd luck
