IPod Touch & Jailbreaking Help Required

Hi,
I recently bought an IPod Touch. I've heard a few people going on about Jailbreaking so I thought I'd try it. Blackrain seemed to make it require a restore and redsnow gave it a blank screen.
One thing I don't know is whether my Ipod Touch is 2nd Gen or 3rd Gen. Does anyone know how to tell? I have a plus and minus thing on my headphones but don't know if thats for the voice thing that's apparently with 3rd Gen. It doesn't adjust the volume when listening to music so no idea what its for. Wish apple would put some sort of print on the device or the packaging to say what Gen it is.
Also if it is 3rd Gen can this be jailbroke because i'm seeing so much conflicting info around. I have firmware 3.1.3.
