Claim back petrol money?

Hello,

I have over a 70 mile drive (round trip) to work every day and am spending at least £50 a week on fuel. The company I work for don't offer any help with travel, so I wondered if anyone has ever heard of any way of getting some sort of compensation from somewhere? Even after I've left that employer? Or am I saving all my petrol VAT receipts for nothing?

Thanks for your time.

What? Who do you think is going to just give you petrol money? You chose to work so far away from home.

You're saving them for nothing - well, you could use them for fuel if you have an open fire at home!

If the company did pay you to go to work you would be taxed on it as a benefit. If you have to use your own car on business you can receive an allowance of up to about 40p per mile tax free or claim tax relief up to that amount if you're self employed. However it DOESN'T apply to commuting to your normal place of work.

Can't think who else you think might pay you. Options get a job nearer home or a home nearer job! Soree!

A 70 mile round trip commute is nothing. On an average economical car that would equate to around £10 worth of fuel each day. People spend several times more than that per day on train tickets. I know one guy who has a 200 mile round trip to work and I bet there are people with longer journeys.

  • Are you based at home or a mobile worker?
  • You can back-date VAT claims if you become VAT registered and the claims you're making were undertaken for the purpose of work, however, you cannot reclaim VAT on things you no longer have. That includes fuel.
