Non-load bearing wall - building regs required?

Hi, does anyone know if Building Regulation Approval is required to be allowed to remove an internal non-load bearing wall? I keep being told different things - and I'm panicking a bit as we initially thought it was fine and have already done it...!
Many thanks for any advice.

Who lives there? IE you on your own or do you let it out etc? What wall was it? Where are the exits from the house in relation to the wall? Fire Safety stuff might come into it...

Thanks for the reply - myself and my girlfriend own the house, just bought it, not living in it yet though as it's a renovation project. The wall split the middle of a downstairs single-storey extension on the back of the house, which extends the kitchen and dining room. We removed it to create an open-plan style kitchen/diner area. There are French windows at the back of the extension on the dining room side, and a back door on the kitchen side - these exits were separated by the wall but now the area is fully open.
I'm guessing then that the issue might be that the wall would have reduced the risk of fire spread?
