How to find surveyors/solicitos?

Options
Hi all, Am planning on buying a place (at last!) but dont really know anyone in the areas we are looking who have bought recently, hence I have no way of selecting a suitable solicitor or surveyor by personal recomendation.

Whats the best way to identify one?

Ask the vendors if they know any other than the one they are using? Make friends with your future neighbours? E-mail everyone you do know locally (friends/ family colleagues) and ask if they can ask their contacts for a recommendation?

Phone a few local solicitors and get estimates/quotes from them in writing. Talk to them and see if you will feel comfortable dealing with them. Check the written stuff they send for "hidden extras".

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.
