Help please - laptop won't go onto internet

The Xbox is wireless0

have you tried the diagnostic tool on internet explorer by the way? Open IE and click tools - diagnose connection problemsDon't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0

Didn't know about this - I've run it and it's telling me to check the troubleshooting section of the manual of the router/modem, which I'll do, although it seems a bit bizarre if the other devices are all working fine. The only warning in the diagnostic list says "The default gateway address could not be resolved via ARP"
Thank you for your help,0 -
the last thing I can think of to try is - even though you have a connection - try opening your wireless network list and re-entering the password - sometimes i have this problem on my girlfriends wireless router. Even though the information is stored to connect automatically to this network, now and again it seems to need to have the password entered againDon't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0

Thanks - I've done that (numerous times, living in hope) but no luck.
Maybe if I switch everything off overnight, the internet fairy will do her magic and it will all work beautifully tomorrow (as if !!)
Appreciate your time, if you think of anything else .................0 -
Can you just try ipconfig again except this time do ipconfig /all and do it with the ethernet cable attached to the laptop, so both connections wired and wireless are enabled.
In the results look for DHCP enabled on both adaptors and also compare the Default gateway values - they should be the same0 -
OK, here we are again.
Thanks Firefox, I did as you suggested and the results showed that DHCP was enabled on the ethernet but not on the wireless, also that the IP addresses were different - the ethernet connection is 192.168.2.2 and the wireless connection is 192.168.2.5
I've managed to get the DHCP to be enabled on both - would you expect the IP address to be the same on both ? When I try to change the wireless connection to .2, it tells me the address is already in use.
Slight 'progress' on connecting to the internet - we are no longer getting the error message when we try to access the bbc - but we can't see the website either.0 -
You'd expect two different IP addresses - one for the ethernet connection and one for the wireless.
But as I said, given the previous ARP error, you need to verify that the 'Default Gateway' values are the same.
You say you've enabled DHCP, can I assume you went to Wireless connection TCP/IP Properties and you now have both options set to auto -
If so go to Control Panel > Network Connections.
Right click on the wired Local Area Connection and select 'Disable'. Remove the ethernet cable (if you haven't already).
Right click on the Wireless Network Connection and select 'Repair'.
Once the connection is repaired open your browser and try to go to www.bbc.co.uk then try www.google.com
If neither of those work got to Start > Run > type cmd and in the box that opens type ping bbc.co.uk
This should hopefully determine whether the problem is a connection issue or a browser issue0 -
Earlier, I could see both connections with comparative information eg default gateway, subnet mask, etc.
Now when I do ipconfig/all I get the following (sorry, can't cut and paste as no connection!!!)
Windows IP Configuration
Host name ......................: x-6c blah blah
Primary Dns Suffix...........:
Node Type .....................: Unknown
IP Routing Enabled .........: No
WINS Proxy Enabled .....: No
Ethernet adapter Wireless Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix .....:
Description .....................................: Tenda Wireless NIC
Physical address .............................: 00-B0 blah blah
Dhcp Enabled .................................: Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled ...............: Yes
Autoconfiguration IP Address ..........: 192.168.2.5
Subnet mask ....................................: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway ..............................: 192.168.2.1
DNS Servers ...................................: 192.168.2.10 -
and the ping bbc.co.uk says
Ping request could not find host bbc.co.uk. Please check the name and try again0
