Help please - laptop won't go onto internet
Comments
-
We can connect to the internet with the ethernet cable. The wireless connection on the laptop is working, but the laptop won't go on the internet. We've tried a different PCMICA card and that was exactly the same, in that we can get the connection but not onto the internet.
We wanted to try deleting the connection (through control panel/network connections) but the delete option is greyed out.0 -
Long shot - Your firewall is not blocking access?0

How could I check that please ?0

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix: [just blank here]
IP Address: 192.168.2.5
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.2.2
ok this shows that you have an IP address for your PCMCIA card
default gateway is basically your router - the IP address that each device (xbox, laptop, pc etc) must send all their messages to before they go out on the ethernet or to another device
The 1st three sections of the IP and default gateway should match (198.168.2.x) then everything connected must have a unique IP to avoid conflicts.
Your router will give the laptop an address (using DHCP) - which is 5 in this case.
try this in the cmd again
tracert www.bbc.co.uk
after the 192.168.1.2 is shown - more IP addresses will list as the trace attempts to go onto the internet.
if the trace gets out you should get a list of IP addresses - if you get ** then even the trace route is being stopped somehow
(not sure about firewall blocking unless the connection itself is firewalled - look in
Start > Control Panel > Network Connections and it will say "Connected - Firewalled" and the icon for the connection should be lit up in blue.
Also your Ethernet connection icon should be there too - is that firewalled aswell? I would expect all connections to be firewalled in XP anyway so it would block all - not just one)Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
Hi Exup
On the cmd, we get the message "unable to resolve target system name www.bbc.co.uk" and no IP addresses showing. Zone Alarm asked if TCP/IPTraceroute Command should access the trusted zone and we said yes.
Firewall - on control panel/network connections, it just says connected, nothing about a firewall0 -
ok - so Zone Alarm may be blocking the connection - Are you using a free version of ZA ?Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0
-
Yes, let me disable it and try (although never had a problem in the past, but we'll give anything a go)0
-
No, makes no difference, still can't access the internet whether Zone Alarm is on or off.0
-
couple of things you can try (especially if ZA has updated itself)
right click on the Zone Alarm icon next to the clock
uncheck the engage internet lock or stop all internet activity.
or
Double click on the Zone Alarm icon next to clock
click on Program Control
click on Main
Make sure the Automatic Lock is turned offDon't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
just checking - is the xbox wireless or connected by ethernet?Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0
