Insuraning young drivers

My sons are just about to pass their tests - yes unfortunately I had twins and they are both passing at the same time. Have read the site and heard that 'fronting' is illegal. Understand that is when you put your name on their insurance as the main person. What happens if I put them on my car insurance and add additional vehicles to it. It that ok and how expensive would that work out. Only thing is I have maximum no claims, it they have an accident I would also obviously lose that as well wouldn't I. Thanks

Yes your no claims would be at stake if you added them. Also if you had additional cars insured, you would obviously declare them as the main drivers, so the premiums would be based on their details.

It would be in the long term interests of your sons to have their own policies, so they can start to build up their own no claims discounts. They should think about taking the pass plus course, as Insurers often allow a discount for this.

My advice is that you sons should go to a decent local broker (not Swintons) and they will search for the best value policies.

As an aside it makes me cringe when I hear people expecting cars when they pass their tests. I expect that you like myself, had to wait until earnt the money to buy a car and pay for the running costs!!!
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • Yeh I no. Thanks for the advice. That is what I have said to them. Do it the right way building your own no claims and will be better for them in the long run :)

There is a thread on here about insurance for young drivers. Insurers are not stupid, if you put your sons on your insurance and then add two vehicles it will be quite obvious who the main drivers are - the only benefit you might get is a three car discount, but the two additional vehicles will be based on their ages and experience.

Get them started on their own policies, earning their own bonus - even better if they can make a contribution to cost, because that way they will learn that if they drive stupidly and have an accident it is them that suffers the financial loss rather than mum and dad.
  • Yeh. They have actually got their own money for car and hopefully insurance - they have been saving for a very long time :( I agree with you really. I know in the long run it is best for them to start off properly. Thanks for the reply.
  • You say twins, as in identicle? Why would you need two insurance policies surely they could mascarade as the same person and have one policy saving half the money :rotfl:

Only kidding as that would be fraud, or am i :D
