Letter from Eon regarding meter

Hi, has anyone else had a letter from Eon saying that their electricity meter needs to be changed ( it could be dangerous blah blah) as it has come to the end of its functional life? I also regularly get cards through the door from Eon saying they want to read the meter, but I've never been with Eon, (have owned the house 6 years) and the previous owner used British Gas as their supplier.

Is it that Eon are just trying it on to screw some money out of me? The house I grew up in was owned by my family for more than 40 years and the meter was never changed in that time. I know things are different now since digital came in, but I'm really suspicious about this.

    Hi fatpiggy,

This will be a standard statutory meter exchange letter, E.ON Energy Services will be the Meter Operator for your area and essentially own the meter itself.

Statutory meter exchange is standard and carried out when the meter reaches a certain age. There is no charge to customers for this.

E.ON Energy Services also have meter reading operatives, so visits from these are perfectly normal as well. If ever in doubt ask for ID, or call E.ON or your supplier for confirmation.

  • I got a letter in late December from Scottish Power Metering Services, saying that they were going to change my electricity meter on behalf of my current supplier (which is eon; but the letter didn't name them).
They haven't done this yet; I assume because of the bad weather!
I do have an old meter, so I think that it is legitimate.

Thanks everyone, especially Brian. Why would they want to read my meter when I've never had an account with them though? That is just wasting their time! Anyway, they only every manage to leave cards as I'm out of the house for 12 hours + per day. Needless to say I read my own meters!!

Eon are probably your local distributor - the company that actually transports the electricity to your house. They may also be the meter reading agent for your current supplier.

I know that npower send Southern Electric to read my parents electricity meter and then they send Lowri Beck to read the gas meter.

    Hi fatpiggy,

Pretty much as glider says, the energy network isn't as simple as your chosen supplier reads you meter.

Many different companies have dedicated businesses for collecting meter information like meter reads.

In this case E.ON Energy Services are likely to be reading all the meters in your particular area.

Like I say this is nothing to be concerned about, just always check ID when someone visits. :)

If you live in the East Midlands area I can confirm that EoN do change the meters for all energy suppliers. Mine was changed last year by them even though I am an Npower customer.
  • What I'd like to know is can I insist on a Smart Meter being installed?
