No water in upstairs bathroom - help!

Woke up this morning and there's no water (hot or cold) coming from the sink, or the bath taps. There was just enough hot water in the shower for a very quick shower and now that's run out too. The water had been running a bit slow for a few days, but we only moved house on a couple of weeks ago and have been distracted by all the other things that needed sorting.

Rang the water company and they're not aware of any problems in the area. Ran the kitchen tap (downstairs) and both hot and cold seem okay, though only had time to run them for 5 seconds as was already late for work. Help!

I think you should get up into the loft. The cold supply will probably be coming from the tank, if the ball c0ck has stuck there, no water will have been going in and over the last days you've been emptying it.
Maybe the supply to your hot tank will also come from here, so again you'd have no water.

Are you sure something hasn't been turned off? Do you have a cold water tank in the loft?
  • Thanks SailorSam and Latecomer.

Yes, I do have a cold water tank in the loft.

Please don't laugh at the stupid question, but, er, how do I unstick a ball !!!!? However little you might think I know about plumbing, I probably know less...

Is the stop tap in your house opened up enough? You need a decent pressure downstairs other wise it affects the upstairs water.

Is it just the water upstairs you are having problems with?

  • Hi Rikki,

Just upstairs so far. Again with the dumb questions, but what is a stop tap? And how can I tell if it's opened up enough?

You'll probably find your stop tap underneath the kitchen sink, it's where the water comes in the house.

If you get in the loft and see the tank is eempty, you'll see a float (ball) on the end of a short piece of metal about a foot long. This float should drop down with the water level and open a valve to let water in, but it can stick. All you need to do is lift it a little and push it down, this should free it.
If there's water already in the tank we ne need to start looking for something else.

If you have just moved in, I bet the previous occupants have turned the water off at the stop-!!!! when they moved out. You have been using the stored water from the tank in the loft and it has now run out.

Cold tap in the kitchen will probably still be OK because that will be straight from the mains.

    This was my thoughts too.

The stop tap is where the water enters the house.
Under the sink, mines at the front of my property in the downstairs cloakroom.

You really need to know where your stop tap is in case you ever have an emergency and need to turn the water off.
