97 mazda 32 - problems when hot

Hi

i have a mazda 323 and it has developed a problem whereby when the engine reaches operating temperature the engine does not rev above idle - if it does rev it is very unstable and the engine coughs splutters and vibrates. The car is basically not driveable when the engine gets hot

can anybody advise what this could be, possible fix and costs please

Hard to tell, but one idea that comes to mind which isn't expensive or difficult to fix is a failed vacuum advance unit. Some Mazda 323 are still be old enough to have one of these or perhaps it's the modern equivalent part that has failed.
When the car is cold the ignition timing is !!!!!! and the fuel mixture richer. If the ignition doesn't get advanced as the car warms up it won't run right at all. Vaccuum advance unit is basically a diaphram which can perish and become punctured with age.
I had to replace a vacuum advance unit on an 1979 Ford Escort, fairly easy and not very expensive.
Quick search on the web finds a Mazda part for £12, might not be the right one though.

My best guess, I'm not a mechanic though.

Could be loads of things, but I'd be suspicious of the coil pack if it has one.

That same Ford Escort I had, after driving it for 10 minutes would cut out and die completely.
This was when I first got it. Everything electrical looked new under the bonnet exception the ignition coil. So I took a chance replaced it for £13 and the problem was cured.:D
