RAF not helping co-habiting couples

Options
My OH has got a new job at RAF Leuchars starting in around September (you know you can never be sure!). We're not married and are currently privately renting. He's due to go to the Falklands in May and due back around 11 August. I'm now job hunting and if I find a job that starts in August, then I'll take it.

OH says that if I have to move whilst he's out of the country then we won't get any relocation allowance (which, I understand is £1k plus removals). Is this true?

I dont really know the answer to this post, so i wont actually make a comment on it, apart from to wish you good luck, and to tell you that someone is reading it..
  • The only way you'd be able to claim the distburance allowance is if you were married and him being on det won't alter that fact I'm afraid. He will be entitled to a singles moving allowances and his things moved at public expense, but that has a limit to the cm3. It certainly wouldn't a full house move I'm afraid.

    In short - no.

The Forces revolve around marriage for the most significant benefits. Somewhat out of synch with society but they have to draw the line somewhere.

Even if you were married, you still have to fund your first house move yourself anyway.

Wrong. If you are single and live out, posted to new location, and move into another living out address you will get full DA and removals.

Technically the answer is yes. If he has not received an Assignment Order from his UK unit to Leuchars then he isnt going anywhere. My advice is to make sure he gets it in writing before he goes to the Falklands, so that you can look for a job in the area with more confidence and he can sort out his removals etc from the UK rather than the other side of the world (it is his move, as "partners" dont come into the equation). Posting people around the UK has massive ramifications, and changing your life on a "nod and a wink" is something that I would not advocate.

I believe that you can't book your removals until your posting notice number comes to you through JPA so if he is entitled to this then once the number comes through it can be booked but as has been said don't take anything as gosple until it's in writing...we've been mucked about many many times.

I'd be interested GT where is this quoted in JSP and can you give the OP a chapter & reference? I suppose like everything in JSP, it's how the individual interprets the magic book. Living out is down the individual, especially in a camp like Leuchars were there is no shortage of single accomodation. I don't think the public expenses will meet the cost of moving an unmarried couple's effects and give them the DA as well. I understand that the costs of removals is purely for the individual and immediate family as public expsense. As we all know a long-term partner, doesn't count unless they have a civil partnership or are married. I may be wrong, but singlies are entitled to around £75 and a limited cm3 of effects to be moved. Claiming anything else would be fraud wouldn't it...what's the magic word ...integrity?

i take it your OH is on 6 Sqn? if so, there are many ways to get help. if he is, then the move to Leuchars is going to be staggered, and he will not get his assignment order to late on. The mamagement on 6 sqn are fully aware of all this, and will help where they can. Just tell your OH to speak the them before going to the falklands.

You are wrong about singlies. If the single person is moving from privately rented to privately rented then full DA and removals will be paid. If they move from privately rented to on camp single accom it will be the lower rate and cubic metreage. It is in black and white in the 754.

Now whether or not he should admit to his common law wife's stuff being in the house...well..;)

  • I can not comment on the official line. But when my old next door neighbour was due to get married... Her then husband to be moved in with her for a few weeks before the wedding, then when the posting notice came he said he lived at her house. They moved the house down to their new station into a quarter even though they had not been married. She didn't move down till a week later till they were married. I'm not sure if it was different as they were about to get married but they moved all her stuff too before they actually got married. He claimed it was his stuff. Guess its the way you present it sometimes!
