  • Sow carrots straight into the ground.

Google "carrot fly". This is your enemy!

Carrots don't like being moved around so are best grown from seed in the ground - but not yet (there will probably be dates to sow on the packet). There are loads of different things that you can grow straight from seed. Enjoy!!

You don't really need to start anything off in trays before planting them out, but it can certainly help some things.
Carrots fork if you transplant them and like parsnips, throw down a long tap root, that doesn't like to be disturbed at all.
Get them in the most stone free and sand like soil you have.

And just to add, do not manure the ground for carrots

I start carrots and parsnips in the ground; everything else is started in modules. One of the main things when getting started in growing veg is slugs and the amount of your seedlings that they can devour overnight.
  • i grow most in trays first - lets them get stronger and to withstand attacks before they get into the big bad world!!!

Carrots are one of the few things you need to sow direct

Can I ask the obvious stupid question? Why not? Having just ordered my carrot seeds and being a beginner (and having a handy source of manure at the end of the garden that I'm trying to get rid off!!)

    Makes them fork.
But I have grown perfect long carrots in well matured 50% manure, 50% soil.
Try half with and half without.
