How have you saved the pennies when decorating your kids room

Just wondering how you may have saved pennies whilst redoing your kids room or any other room in the place you live.

I have this month got money together to do my sons room up, but my daughter was feeling sad as he room wasnt being done, and I dont have enought to do both.

So here is what I have done, I bought 3 rolls of valentine heart wrapping paper, thanks to poundland and have covered her wardrobe with it. and her cheast of drawers..

I have bought girlie wrapping paper sheets and used them as posters.. 30p a sheet..

Visited carboot and got a bratz folding sofa for £2.50, and a pink cushion for £1..

Not much I know but looks better then her brown wardrobe that we was given but is a solid good wardrobe..

    Well done!

A year ago my girls decided they would like a disney princess room, so the first place I tried was free cycle. A lovely lady gave me two matching duvet sets, a set of curtains and a canopy that goes over the bed. A carboot sale got my another canopy for 1. I got some stickers that I put on their white furniture from a sale online £6. And the lampshade for £1.99 off ebay. Finally I got a toy box come chairs for £5 off my local gumtree (£39.99 brand new) and £4 on Tazbar for 4 framed pictures. The pink paint I got for free off a friend.

my daughters wardrobe and drawers were free (left behind when we moved into house) and look very cute painted white, bed was an ebay bargain, duvet cover free using a littlewoods first order code, bunting made as a naming day present, shelves from freecycle, free numbers and letters freizes from the book start packs. Made curtians from cheap denim from ikea trimmed with half a metre of fancier stuff.

Did buy good down pillow and once she is reliably dry at night will invest in an all seasons down duvet.

I remember my mum bought some odd rolls of kids wall paper reduced & made panels on the walls bordered by some border rolls also reduced, everyone commented on how good it looked. It would be quite designer now lol esp if you used picture frames as the borders!

  • Well done - when we did my DDs room I used my wedding veil (which was 8ft) to make a canopy for her then I painted pink and white stripes half way up the wall and topped with a thick pink horizontal stripe for a dado rail, painted above that white and stenciled pink bows at the top of the wall.
My DSs room was painted magnolia with one wall sky blue and DH went to the breakers and got a lot of different wheel hubs, cleaned them up and mounted them on the blue wall.
I crotched throws for both of them DDs pink, black and white stripes and DSs blue, black and beige stripes.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

  • I used to paint second hand furniture, obtained in second hand shops, auctions or donated to us, to match. I used to find that ragging another colour on in a different shade of the original helped to hide imperfections. The furniture ended up looking like a matching set. When my four boys were very young I used to use transfers or stencils to decorate the furniture.

I used to make curtains for their bedrooms using cheap sheets. I folded them in half and stitched heading tape to the fold thereby effectively lining them.

Freecycle didn't exist when my sons were younger but I'm a big fan of it now. It's a great place to obtain almost anything. I have 2 grandchildren on the way and I have recently obtained a lovely buggy with cosy toes, waterproof cover and carry cot. Also a cot mobile, baby bath and some home made wine making equipment.

Some tricks I have used is to make a fabric cover for my wardrobe - hem it with magiweb, put paint stamp pattern on and glued to my wardrobe. It's lasted years!

I bought book covering in a holographic pattern and cut out a pattern of stars (for my bedroom wall :D ) . A big one in the middle, surrounded by little ones and sparks! Will try to take a pic later. I also covered an old fashioned bedside cabinet with the same holographic stuff - which peels easily off walls so no damamge done :)

Embellish scarves from 2nd hand shops with sequins. Cheap and effective (and you can get some amazing ones) ( i have two up)

I can draw pics by eye, so when i do have kids, i would draw a character in pencil or chalk, then paint over it with a fine paintrbush. Have been wanting my neighbour to let me do this in her sons room for years !

Sounds lovely what you have done. You could also cut out a heart shaped stencil and spray paint hearts on the wall? (i would hold the template in place with bluetack...)

Look out for a cheap bratz t shirt (any size - even second hand ) and you could cut out the "picture" and make it a feature on a tailor made cushion? Ot you use a cushion cover you have - and sew it on. Sequins, buttons and sparkly things. I have a kit box of things i keep. Babys second hand clothes can have amazing vibrant patterns too for various fabric touches.

Check ebay for cheap material too

    bratz stickers

bratz top for cushion? or this one

you could embellish something with these (cushion, frame some of them laid out all pretty? )

    this is a nice treat

    light shade

    premade cushion panel

OHHHHH love this! (here used and cheaper )

you could buy bratz wrapping paper and make your own storage boxes. You could always decoupage - great fun she could help too! (sure you could get paper cheaper in shops though)

Hope that give s you some ideas. I may be back with more.

If you are arty you could try pencil drawing one on the wall to be painted over? Then gradually do the whole collection? :D
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Thankyou zippychick some very good ideas there.

I have covered a big tv box with wrapping paper for a toy box for her.

My daughter is very strange in her tastes, we have abit of pink, red hearts, bratz, dogs, and then dinosaurs as she loves them..

Just this woodchip wallpprer that lets it down but its looking ok..

I remember a few years ago my Son was mad on "Londons Burning" on TV. I painted London landmarks (Buck house, tower, houses of parliment etc) on his wall with poster paint. Added an orange glow for fire & hung his collection of fire engines on screws.

I suppose you could try this with any theme. Army camp scene with action man, fairy scene with Barbie etc.

Just make sure the screws are secure. You can just balance the toys on so they can be removed for playing.
