Unable to find 2006 Fixed Tarriff on Compare sites

Options
Hi

Trying to sort out my OAP parents gas/elect bill. They have been with Powergen/Eon since Feb 2006 on a tarrif called Powergen Capped 2010.
It was fixed for 4 years.

Tried to do a compare with new rates, and nothing seems to appear by that tarriff name.

Just trying to do the maths, as Eon are offering them a new tarrif called "Fixed Price Protection 2012." It claims to be the cheapest on the market.

I did a quick hit on Npower due to the £90 cashback via quidco, but i want to make sure i get the right comparrison otherwise i may be going from the pan into the fire!

Their last annual usage was 3,100kw Electric and 20,080kw Gas (Standard meter, no Econ 7)

The postcode is LE2 (Midlands)

Any help on the matter would be much appreciated

Andy

    Hi Andy,

There were a few Capped tariffs that are due to end this year, if you can let me know the full end date I’ll be able to find the correct tariff information for you.

These prices are likely to be very cheap compared to today’s prices so it’s definitely going to be worth getting the full benefit of the Capped term whilst it lasts.

  • Hi Brian,

The current plan finishes end February, with the new Tariff starting 1st March.

They were offered the standard rates, which were shown on the letter, but at the bottom of the letter, it mentioned the Fixed Protection 2012, but i don't believe it gave rates. Just said that Eon were the cheapest fixed 2 year tariff on the market. Not sure how that stacks up with BG now offering 7% cuts.

My suggestion to them was to go for an online tariff. I would like for them to benefit from the savings and any cashback available by doing that.

As already mentioned by Brian, if you have a fixed tariff dating back to 2006, it will probably be cheaper than anything available today so stay with it until the end to get maximum savings.

If you can't see that specific tariff on the comparison sites today, choose any tariff as your existing one and, as long as you input consumption in kWh, it''ll show what is the cheapest options ... just ignore any savings it suggests as these wont apply, just the cheapest total cost is what you need to look at.

Regarding todays declared cut by BG, note that only applies to gas and may not apply to all tariffs . Also be aware that when a major supplier changes prices, it's usually only a matter of time that the others will review their prices.

  • Cheers for the advice. It only has 3 weeks to run before it expires, so thats why i am looking now. Want everything in place for 1st March if possible.
Good point about the total usage rather than saving. I have been looking at the latter, but i suppose it's total cost that matters overall.

I may hold off short while and see what the remaining companies do with their rates & tariffs.

    Hi Andy

This is going to be either Capped version 8 or 9, the two are very similar, but Capped version was ever so slightly more expensive and was available to customers who took the tariff after 5 July 2009.

The letter you’ve received will be offering E.ON Price Protection April 2012, this is purely because you were on a Capped tariff before so we will offer like for like.

These new protected prices will be significantly higher than the Capped v8 or v9, as they will have a further premium for securing the price for the next 2 years.

I’ve checked a few of the ‘well known’ comparison sites and have found they have Capped version 9 available in the current tariff section, so you should using this be able to carry out a successful comparison.

  • Thanks Brian for the advice and for finding the tariff, much appreciated.

  • Just slightly off topic.

Me and the wife are in the middle of changing providers. She has just been contacted by the new provider Npower who have said that they have discovered our gas & elect supply is provided by some sort of shared pipe/supplier, and will have to charge us a different rate to allow for this. They mention a practice that has been in place since 1995. (Her property was built in 2003)

Never heard of this before. Any help with what it is they are saying?

Seems like the saving we were making is going to be eat up by this new rate.:(

Sounds like the gas may be transported by an IGT (independent gas transporter) rather than the National Grid.

This just means that you have to pay an additional £42 per year, these are costs passed on by these companies for the transportation of the gas to your property.

If you email me your details to the address on the left, I'll be able to tell you straight away if this is the case.
