Need to rename 100s of pic files easily

At present have number of folders containing picture files taken from my camera. I want to put all pics into one folder but a vast number of files have the same file name like pic_00x.jpg which is a default setting of the camera.

Is there a free program i can use that will easily rename all files quickly?

If you use a Mac, you can do this with a simple Automator action; no additional software required.

Try this: in each folder, highlight the group of photos you want to rename. Right click, select rename, type in a name for the group, say Christmas2009-. Each file in the selected group will be renamed, Christmas2009-1, Christmas2009-2, Christmas2009-3 and so on.

oldtoolie beat me to it. I went for this method but he forgot to mention that you have to add the extension as well, in my case, .JPG

I find Lupas Rename to be quite a versatile free utility for various bulk renaming jobs.:j
