Cheapest Way To Travel on London Transport

Hi

We're spending three days in London next week, and I'm wondering what the most cost effective way of getting around on the tube is?

Years ago, when there were just Travel Cards - that seemed like the best way. But now there are Oyster cards - which I don't quite understand. Do they work out cheaper now? Seems to me to be a pay as you go system - so presumably if you use it more, you'll pay more?

Can someone explain in idiot proof terms which is best! Thanks

There is a £3 refundable deposit for an Oyster card.

It is hard to work out what the costs will be one way vs. the other so to avoid giving yourself a headache take it on trust Oyster works out the same and often cheaper than alternative ways of paying. I find it very conveniant too. The key phrase is "daily capping" on the amount you pay which is how it ends up being same or less than a travel card. So best of both worlds, unlimited travel capped at travel card (or less) price and you only pay for what you need if you do 1 or 2 journeys.

If you use the online web site to minitor all this be aware the web site can lag behind your travelling event by up to 48 hours.
  • Thanks very much for your replies - I did try to search before I posted but I couldn't find anything so thanks for the link :)

    Cheers!
