Historic weekend in the Southeast

Im trying to surprise my husband for his birthday weekend (11-13 August) with a weekend away at a bed & breakfast. Ideally, it would be in the southeast (the poor man will have to drive there), near a cute village or two with stuff to do. I'm in no way opposed to a murder mystery weekend, or a spa weekend, or staying in a haunted castle, although I believe theyre pretty scarce this far south. We love walking and photography, so views are perfect. Does anyone know of a place to recommend?

My friends rave about a villiage called Lavenham. Not too sure of the full details as I haven't been. website can be found here:

Not sure its South East enough, but I would recommend Walberswick, Suffolk.

Its a tiny little fishing village with lovely long, windswept walks on the beach to villages such as Southwold. It only has two pubs both of which have accommodation, but the nicest is the Bell Inn (see here). It only has a couple of rooms so might be booked up, but you can try! Food is good and the people are friendly.

The word to sum up Walberswick is quaint!:D
