Car due a service?
Hi,
I bought a car at the weekend - its a W reg peugeot 306 1.9D its done 113,000 and has MOT till Jan 2011 (bought for £1100)...
Anyway the car is running fine - I've had a look at the maintenance record and the car has had the following services:
5737 miles
8985 miles (type A) - whatever this is?!
19,196 miles
27,807 miles (type A)
50,896 miles (type A)
69,195 miles (full)
Timing Belt replaced 71,113 miles
Therefore has been a while since the car has had a service - should I book one in?
Should I got to a main peugeot dealer or will any garage do? what ballpark figure wld i be expected to pay...
The only prob I have with the car is the airbag light on the dashboard is continually flashing, I've googled this problem and looks like lots of other peugeot owners 306/406 have this problem and looks like it is due to the connectors under the drivers seat - would/could this be sorted in a service?
Advice wld be appreciated (don't know much bout cars!)
Thanks

An independant garage should do a full service for around £100 including parts and yes its probably long overdue.
Fixing the airbag problem will not be included in the service. You can fix this yourself with a tie wrap assuming it is the connector that is at fault. I had the same problem with my 206 a few years ago, just google it and I'm sure there will be a video online showing you exactly how to sort it.0 -
take it to a independant garage (not the main dealers or a national fast fit centre) they will service it no problem, best to go to one recomended rather than lucky dip. strictly speaking repairs generally don't come under servicing, but im sure if you asked nicely they would have alook and repair it if they are quiet enough.
but remember to let them know if it needs any major additional work this is not you giving them the go ahead to do it,tell them to phone you first with a quote before doing any extra work....work permit granted!0 -
Air bag light will more than likely be the connectors under the drivers seat. Easy fix for yourself. Just push the seat back, lift the carpet and you'll see them. Make sure they are a snug fit.
Any independent will service your car for you, and it will be a lot cheaper. But if all your after is another service stamp, then do use an independent, or alternatively buy your filters and oil from your local motor factors and do it yourself. It'll take about an hour. I have a 406 HDI, and that's all it takes me and that includes taking the bottom shield off and putting it back on.That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -
Hi ZX,
The airbag issue would not be covered in a service, as its a repair unfortunately, but im pretty sure its a relatively cheap fix, I would go to a local auto electrician about it.
As for the service, its well overdue a service, they are usually a 12k miles or once a year service interval, whichever comes first, is it the non-turbo version?
Will be a damn site more economical after a good service as well!
At the age and mileage, I would go to a good independant, try and find one that is recommendedI havent "Lost" my sense of humour, it was cruelly ripped away from me! :wall:0 -
If your going to service it yourself, then use a good quality 10/40 semi synthetic oil.
And you can get a service kit for peanuts if you don't want to buy locally:

Thanks Quinny - I've read on other forums people fixing the airbag light problem themselves only to reoccur after adjusting/moving seat or going over a bump! Will have a go anyway...themac1977 wrote:Hi ZX,

yeah its the non-turbo version - will have a look around for reccommended independent - service may have to wait till I've paid the tax which runs out end of feb - £185!0 -
If you do go down the route of a garage doing it, then your location might yield an MSE member that can recommend one, and then just tax it for 6 months to help offset the cost.
Or service it yourself for around £40. Much cheaper. That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -
If I buy a car I generally do:
oil filter + oil
air filter
bleed brakes
spark plugs (if it's petrol)
inspect HT leads and replace if knackered
coolant flushHappy chappy0
