Best Bank Account (with passbook) for the Elderly

My 88 year old Uncle's local branch of the Norwich & Peterborough BS is closing and he is anxious to know where to move his account.

He is not looking for savings account or investment and has around £3000 maximum in his account. He really doesnt like change and ideally wants an account with a passbook. I have looked at the Post Office accounts but there doesnt seem anything suitable. His monthly income is from an army pension and government pension.

Can anyone help me to point him in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

  • Can't really help as alot of building societies and banks don't really have any passbook current accounts. Quick browse only brings up building society saving accounts.

Although I was in Lloyds today and the elderly woman had a passbook for her current account. So it might be useful to ask in the bank if this is still available to new customers.
  • Thanks, will go into Lloyds TSB tomorrow along with others. I told him not to worry, but I dont think its going to be an easy task after having had a quick internet search myself, hence my posting here.

    Appreciate your reply.

I don't think Lloyds do the pass book for new customers.

Its a thing of the past for people who had old accounts with them.

Those accounts are not worth having today as they pay 0.1% interest.

(Customer's money are probably losing value with inflation but they don't seem bothered)

    What about Nationwide Building Society?

Check HBOS, I think they have some sort of passbook account. Someone was in the PO the other day and used a Halifax passbook for ID, it looked like a fairly new passbook so they might still do it.

This account comes with a passbook ... http://www.halifax.co.uk/savings/liquidgold.asp

Afraid the interest rate is only 0.05% though.

But it really depends on what banks/building societies have branches near his home - go for the closest you can, as his mobility is unlikely to improve over time.
