Help filling out P50 Tax Rebate form

Hi, I just got a P50 form in order to get a tax rebate. However, there are a few things I am unsure of. At the front of the form it asks for a tax reference and national insurance number and below that it says "issued by" and there's space for an address. I know the tax reference and the national insurance number but I do not understand the issued by part. Is that my employer? or the tax office? The last problem im having is who I address the letter to. On the form, in the top left there is space for an address. I've gone onto the HMRC website and typed in my employers information in the tax office locator. Is that the office that I send the form to? or is there a main office?

    1. The 'issued by' is where it's sent to you by an HMRC office. So just leave that blank

    2. Yes ..... send it to the office identified from your (previous?) employer details.
    If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

    I too will be filling in this form in a few weeks and have a question on the final part of the form.
    I will definately be ticking the box to this question.
    • I have been unemployed and have not claimed one of the taxable benefits listed, and I am not in receipt of a pension.

    however I don't knlow if I should tick the box for this question.
    • I do not expect to go back to work (including part-time or casual employment) before the start of the new tax year on 6 April, and I am not in receipt of a pension.

    I don't plan to work in the next 12 months but you never know if a suitable offer comes in I might be tempted. Should I not fill in the last question? does filling in the last question increase the tax refund I might get?

    If you don't expect to tick the box. If you do go back though you need to inform them as you will have underpaid tax.

    If you don't tick the box you won't get the refund now, you'll have to apply again at the end of the tax year.

    I forgot to mention I will be getting a redundancy payment which will have some of it taxed at 40%. will I get the diff between 20 & 40% back just by ticking the first question

    No you have to wait until the end of the tax year, unless you take up employment and hand on you P45 then your tax will equalise over the year.

    When I've used a P50 form in the past, my tax code has always been amended immediately to reflect the refund, i.e. a refund of £20 would lower my tax code by £100. I assume this is so I don't need to let them know if I were to go back to work in the tax year.

    I have been specificaly told that I will not have to wait untill the end of the year. I thought the whole point of a P50 was to get back overpaid tax without waiting.

    You are correct, vickk. If you are not planning to work or claim JSA before the end of the tax year, you tick that statement and you will receive a refund for the whole year.
    If you are undecided or temporarily unemployed and not claiming JSA, then you tick the box for an unemployment repayment and you make a similar claim every 4 weeks until you gain work or its the end of the tax year.
    On no account leave your claim until the end of the tax year as you will then be in a huge queue with thousands of poeple wanting refunds.

    If you tick you aren't going to work you will get the tax refunded, otherwise they expect you will hand your P45 into another job, get on their payroll and that will sort out any overpayment.

    I don't know about putting in a monthly claim but given the time people are waiting for tax refunds I think it's probably best to tick that you don't expect to be working for the rest of the year, get a full tax refund then sort out any overpayment of the refund when you subsiquently get a job.
