Well - true that trust and honesty are indeed important - but they are in any job actually.

I would certainly be astonished to have to go through all that palaver just to get a cleaning job (even at the correct rate of pay - still less NMW). I havent had to apply for jobs for quite some time now - but I would expect to get any cleaning job I asked for instantly just like that actually. At the most - just get some comment about "I've got one other person to see - and then I'll let you know".

Personally - I took the precaution of getting a reference from someone I did a bit of cleaning for years ago now and have kept that on file (so I have a glowing reference if required) - but I wouldnt even expect to have to produce that to get a cleaning job.

Hmmm....on further thoughts = I would expect to get any cleaning job where the person concerned worked on their own instantly with no trouble at all. If it was a cleaning firm - then I would expect rather differently - as in expecting them to only give me a job in a group of cleaners if they were desperate and short of applicants (but I would still expect to get the job - as I think they probably ARE short of applicants). So - I guess there is that difference in what I would expect.

Back to specifics - if they want a CRB check - then obviously its up to them to pay for it if need be. Why should you pay an employers' expenses for them after all?

What you describe might be the way it is for someone cleaning in a private house but any organisation like a charity will have to show that procedures have been followed, even for a small cleaning job. If you think that getting a cleaning job is this easy nowadays, I think that you are out of touch - all jobs are competitive in a recession and, in places where I'm familiar, are at minimum wage.

I didn't pick up any question of the OP having to pay for the CRB herself.
  • If it was a job working with children or vulnerable people, it would be an enhanced CRB, not a standard CRB. The reason one is being requested for this job is probably because you could gain access to confidential records and because you are a keyholder at a place that has such records.

Why are they intersted in the level of education for a cleaning post?

In a recession, employers can be picky and it can be a way of weeding people out when there are too many candidates.

Hi i work for a company cleaning..i was lucky as used to work for them full time so when i left to do my current job they allowed me to apply for the job by just starting as they knew me so slighty different.
I work 6-8am now 5 days a week (was 7) and i have to unlock the building at times and am there on my own too some days..i am basically trusted to look after the building which holds lots of things that i could possibly steal so they know they have to be careful. Other people who have worked there in the past have had proper interviews so nothing unusual although i do agree some companys can go a little ott!
I would go for it if you want the job and see how you get on..some people may feel it is not worht it too giving you a better chance..good luck x

Maybe they use timesheets and special cleaning materials that have instructions for use. Language should not be a problem but literacy is important.

    What Oldernotwiser says...

Plus, depending on the age of the applicants, schooling can also count towards 3/5/10 year checkable history.

Plus, the date an applicant left school can clearly indicate their age :-/
    £1 / 50p 2011 holiday flight + hotel expenses = £98.50600

HSBC 8% 12mth regular savings = £80 out of a maximum remaining allowance of £2500

    "3 months' salary" reserve = £00 / £3600

In a charity shop? Sure, I suppose there is some confidential information there but no more than a shop would have always had. It's not exactly the human genome project is it!
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything
  • Also as far as I know if they have charitable status the CRB checks cost them nothing. It's a bit of safety for them without the cost so why wouldn't they take it?

CRB's are free for volunteers, I think the CRB does have to be paid for if it is paid employment even if the employer is a charity.
