2 NCBs 1 Car

Here is my situation, right now, I have a Nissan Cefiro which is almost up for it's insurance renewal. This car is my good car and it's not going anywhere. I'll have 4 years NCB come renewal time. It's insured with Direct Line

I also have a Volvo 940 which is my spare car and probably going to be my commuter car too as the car will sustain too much damage on the commute to my new job (it's 60% single track lanes with epic pot holes, minor flooded areas and protruding branches, particularly in passing places). The Volvo has just had it's insurance renewed with 3 years NCB, with Direct Line.

Direct Line do give me the best deals on both cars, yes I have and do shop around. This is mainly because Direct Line only ask for 3 years claim history and my claim history is dreadful (I used to do 60,000 miles a year, drove a highly nickable car and lived in an area full of criminal scum, go figure). Even with Direct Line I'm not allowed protected NCB. The other reason is Direct Line have an unusually low risk factor for the Cefiro vs every other insurer I've tried.

Both cars cost me about £35 a month to insure, and £190 to tax each year, both get around 25mpg.

So I understand that an unused NCB can sit around for up to 2 years before it expires, so here is the plan.

I have an option to get a company car, currently I have turned this down, but the situation is going to be reviewed in 6 months, I accept the company car and sell off the Volvo at the end of the insurance period

When the insurance comes up for renewal on the Cefiro in 2011, I take out a new direct line policy using the Volvo's NCB, cancelling the existing policy.

In 2012 I will have two NCBs available, both with 5 years. I then cancel my policy and renew using the dormant NCB from 2010.

Lather, rinse repeat.

The reason for this is to maintain a backup NCB in the event of my losing it for whatever reason.

Is this possible? legal? sane?

If you think you will need two cars in the future, then go for it, nothing wrong with the plan in my opinion.
