Northern Rock PPI Offer

Back in August 2007 I wrote to Northern Rock asking them to cancel PPI on a loan I had taken out for £22K on the grounds that I thought it had been missold as I hadn't been informed it was optional and not a condition of the loan, and also that I had pre-existing medical conditions that I had not been asked about that may have invalidated any potential claim. At the time I received a response that rejected my claim, and so I thought, that was that.

Today though, completely out of the blue, I have received a letter from NR stating they have reviewed my case to see whether it was handled appropriately back in 2007. The gist of the letter seems to say that they don't believe it was, and therefore they are offering me a refund of premiums and interest of over £7800 plus the 8% simple interest, which amounts to over £2500!!

Now naturally I am over the moon, not to say slightly stunned (understatement!), as I had not pressed for this, or even referred the claim elsewhere for further investigation. BUT, I can't help feeling this is a bit too good to be true! Everything looks official and in order - headed paper, appropriate documentation, correct name, address and loan account details - but because it's so unexpected I'm worried it may be a very clever scam to obtain my bank details. It asks for these so they can transfer the money to me. Am I being ridiculously over cautious?? I intend to ring them tomorrow just to check it's not all some glorious mistake, but has anyone else had a PPI offer on old loans arrive out of the blue like this? The loan was settled back in 2007 too.

  • Hi there I have had a similar thing from Northern Rock and it appears to be in order but they said payment would be made within 10 days but it's now the 8th day and I still haven't received it. Did your letter say that too?
  • After receiving my unexpected letter from Northern Rock last week I gave them a call to see if it was indeed genuine. The chap I spoke to told me Northern Rock are reinvestigating all rejected PPI claims from 2007 to see if they were handled appropriately and fairly, and in our case his decision was that it wasn't. If you've made claims to them in the past and been rejected you may find yourself receiving a letter too.

I am very happy to say that today we find ourselves £10,427 richer, and all because of a letter template I found on this site in 2007. Wooohooo!!!:j
