European inspiration wanted!

Looking for a 7-10 day holiday in September 2010, I want a holiday where I can combine sightseeing with a few days chilling out on beach or pool. My budget is tight no more than £500pp for two of us travelling so I need somewhere that is value for money but still nice. I do not want to go to a huge resort with loads of brits other than that I am open to suggestion....

Any ideas????????

How fussy are you about quality of accommodation vs. cost?

Do you want to be with other Brits or happy to stay in an area where other nationalities stay?

As long as the accommodation is clean I am not bothered about it being glamorous, I don't like big resorts and am quite happy to stay in a resort with any nationalities who happen to turn up! I am looking for an area without a huge nightlife quiet and relaxed suits me better!!

How about the Languedoc in the south of France? tons of sightseeing, Canal du Midi, Roman history, medieval villages, Cathar Castles plus unspoilt countryside full of vineyards. Quiet beaches, not too touristy and certainly not full of Brits.
Ryanair flights into Beziers, Carcassonne, Perpignan and Montpellier.

Rent a house on a complex on the banks of the Canal, September prices from just 200 euros per week sleeps up to 4, any day arrivals and odd durations OK too
