Cheapest way to get a BT line without a contract

What is the cheapest way of getting a BT phone line without a contract?
I've got a BT socket but never used it (currently with Virgin), so don't know if it is connected.
I'm only in need of the connection until the end of June, so don't really want a contract. BT had an offer a little while ago but all their tariffs now have a 12 month contract.
Any help appreciated and thanks in advance.

As you say, BT now does 12 month contracts - or nothing.
You might be lucky with Post Office Home Phone - but they may charge over £100 for connection.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Just spoken to PlusNet and they say the line isn't connected. They charge £50 for connection until the end of the month.
Checked BT website and they confirm this too, but charge £125

Post office charge £110 if not already connected, but there is no minimum contract. I assume plusnet is also a 12/18m term?
Why only required till June? If you'll be switching to another BT line you may be better paying it or going with BT for 18 months and getting the free connection offer. If your moving in June, I'd consider going without a landline and just using mobile phone/internet if you can.0 -
Plusnet has no contract, but with a £40 cancellation charge if before 12 months.Post office charge £110 if not already connected, but there is no minimum contract. I assume plusnet is also a 12/18m term?

Only needed until June as I'm a student and will be moving somewhere else next year (but won't need a line during the holiday June-September).0
