Hi all,
I have a private garden which people keep going into and the solution I see is putting up a 6ft fence, I would prefer it with gaps (rather than panels) as it would generally tend to last longer (I have been advised panels can't handle weather very well).
I need to cover 76-80ft and I am wondering what is the best place to get the materials cheap and how much would I be looking to pay. I already know a landscaper so they would help me in putting it up.
Regards

15 2.4mt posts @ £5 , 50 lin metres 38x100mm rails @ £0.75 and 160 1.8mt uprights @ £1.50 makes a total of £352.50 for the materials . Oh plus 15 bags of postcrete would be another £60
Any decent builders merchants should be able to supply these materials at prices close to or cheaper than these

Is this a front garden?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Be careful that you don't put up a fence of more than a metre in height closer than 2m to a highway or footpath - you need planning permission to do that. Whether it's a front or back garden doesn't enter into it.
I don't know about the wording of the latest planning law but the old legislation said that it shouldn't be more than a metre in hight adjacent to a highway, bridleway or footpath - and most council planning departments interpreted adjacent to mean less than 2m but it wasn't law. Some local authorities (e.g. Lichfield) decided to interpret the old law much more harshly and wouldn't allow anything without a planning application.
Best to check before building your fence.I am the Cat who walks alone0 -
Does it really have to be that tall? If you want to be able to see through it what about wire stock fencing? That costs about £30 - £40 for 50 meters, plus the cost of the posts. You could then put rails between the posts if you're feeling flush, although it does make it easer to climb over!
Why are people coming in? If they're using your garden as a short cut I should think they'd be put off by any sort of fence and if dogs are coming in you'd need something more substantial than simple post & rail. More information would be useful.0 -
Hi all,
Just to give further details, the garden is a back garden and it does have a path to the neighbours house as it's part of a block of four terraced houses. There is a wall with a gap for the path but then there is another chunk of the side which has only a bush, the bush is dead so people tend to walk in through there as well.
I came into this property last year and the garden was in a state, in summer I am planning to re-grow the grass and put out a table and chairs for whenever there is a bit of sunny weather.
The problems are several. Firstly the height issue is as for the dog that's coming in, I have seen him jump 3ft and 4ft but not 6ft.
Second the neighbour, he just uses it to go to his van which he parks at the front of the property, I am more bothered about the fact that he comes into my garden rather than the parking situation as I do not have a motor myself anyways.
Thirdly is groups of 11 year-olds come in on bundles of 10. They leave litter about and have suffered garden theft this year a couple of times. The other day they started to throw snowballs at the windows and when they were discovered they just runaway and I don't even know where do they come from to be honest.
I am querying with the council so I follow the procedures or whatever their requirements are. I basically need something of the height of 6ft and that can handle harsh weather conditions. (We have quite a big deal of wind where I live).0 -
as long as you're not too exposed, a normal 6ft fence would suit, have you asked your landscaper for a price? He' probably the best person to ask as trades like that tend to know each other0

Blimey, my sympathies - no wonder you need a fence. Ask your landscaper friend to help you get the best deal, but be prepared for a good few hundred pounds. By the sound of it worth every penny.
Good luck, hope you get it sorted in time for summer!

i passed a house yesterday (end terrace) and he had a huge 8ft wood fence all round the back garden. inside the original brick wall. the whole thing looks a bit stupid.
its been there for yrs now. and i doubt he got PP.Get some gorm.0 -
Get a 2m close board fence put up with 4 inch posts and no-one will be getting over it... if its properly done it will withstand all normal weather conditions. I have one (I back onto playing fields) and its very secure. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0

Three years ago I paid £1200 for 84ft of fencing (16 panels) + two gates. The fencing was close-board 5ft panels, fitted into concrete posts with 1ft concrete gravel boards. It was fitted by one man in three days, the posts still stand perfectly in alignment to this day, and is certainly going nowhere (each post is buried in concrete 2 foot into the ground, with the hole about a 18 inches in diameter). Ensure the panels you get have been pre-treated - I see so many people get new fences fitted that have no treatment on them whatsoever! I guess they like the "lighter look" of the untreated wood. Also avoid the cheapo panels the supermarkets do, they'll be as good as paper after a few years.0
