Message says windows security alert you computer is infected. We have closed out of this (as we believe this is actually the virus) but does this mean that the computer is now infected. We have McAfee and it is now scanning but is taking for ever.

stop the scan you are doing then do the following:-
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

As long as you didnt click on it to scan your puter - its a well known problem, they would tell you you have a million infections and to download and pay for their program - then you should be fine.0

You could try an online scan from somewhere like onecarelive
malware bytes is a very good product and there are a few others
I would recommend looking at Gizmo's site for tested freeware that is also rated , so you have a good idea of what its likely to do before you download and install it
I used to help out on a few sites help rooms anyone that got spyware/trojans and viruses and I wrote a few security websites advising people how to repair their pc's if they got infected, it is so easy, one wrong click..that was about 5 years ago eek,but one word of advice I can give is to be wary of any advice you get because there is "social engineering" which can cause even greater damage to your privacy etc...
but please have a look at gizmo's freeware site just put "gizmo freeware" into google and it will lead you to techsupports website
also secunia psi is a good freeware program that will keep your programs all up to date
Please ensure you clear any trace of it off your system though, better to be a little paranoid than a lot compromised
if you have any further problems please message me, i will only answer you publicly as that assures you and others that i am not social engineering or a black hat...0 -

Social Engineering sounds like a Harriet Harman to me. Look at other threads on this site and you will find that there a lot of very helpful people on this forum and most advice given is pretty damn good.

Malwarebytes is a proven programme for infections as describe in post 1.
I agree that there are others available but for sheer simplicity Malwarebytes is the best I have come across. It has a high detection rate and a low false positive rate and the log produced provides very very little detail about the poster.0 -

Firstly, can you start a new thread rather than latching on to someone else's as it can get a bit confusing. Then hopefully someone will see it and be able to give you the help you need.0
