carpet/wood floor in lounge/diner

I have a lounge/diner and have been weighing up wether to have carpet or wood flooring (and driving my other half up the wall) for months. Is it possible to have the lounge area carpeted and the dining bit with a wooden floor or would it be difficult to get it right?

Can't remember where I saw it but I've been in a room which was carpeted but had an inset wooden area where the dining table was. Would need some expertise from the flooring fitter but has the potential to look smart.

Perfectly possible with an edging strip, but in my opinion isn't a good look. Used to have different flooring in the kitchen to the dining room it runs off - hated it. It makes the combined area look much smaller too.

I've been driving my hubby mad with exact same thing! I've been wondering if it's possible to have wooden floor with an inset carpet in the living area?
We've tried huge rugs which the couches rest on so is an absolute mare to clean, we've tried smaller rugs which just slip all over the place, instead of getting carpet.
I would be interested in finding out what you eventually decide to do.
