Head gasket job question????

Hi all, my car is booked in tomorrow to get the head gasket fixed, three garages have confirmed that my problem is the head gasket so I have to sort something out.

My question is have any of you had your head gasket done and how long did the car last after the work?

Thanks, Paul.

    What car is it?

Some cars have known issues with the headgasket and had uprated parts released to resolve the issues.

So long as the job is done properly, correct parts used, the head is skimmed if needed, and any possible causes of overheating seen to, it should hopefully never need doing again (only exception is probably Rovers). I think most issues with cars needing the headgasket doing again are due to mechanic's incompetence or laziness.

If the job is done correctly and the correct parts are used then a Rover should never need it doing again either!

My dad's Punto had the head gasket done at about 16,000 miles. I don't know the mileage now but it's eleven years old and he drives every day so obviously it's lasted a long time since the work was done.

He had another Punto previously and the head gasket went on that too when the car was quite young. He got rid of that car when it was around 90,000 miles.

Fiats do have weak head gaskets, although on Cinquecentos and Siecentos (FIRE engine) Spesso do an aftermarket gasket which is slightly thicker and supposed to be more reliable than the original part.

As said before you authorise any repairs find out exactly what has caused the gasket to go.

Complete waste of time getting it fixed but not dealing with the underlying fault which will result in yet another gasket repair being needed and the underlying fault fixed.
