tax free shopping scam

This may be of interest if you are flying out of an airport. I had a lot or world points and so I thought I would buy a LG external DVD rewriter and CD drive at Dixons on my way out of London Heathrow. When I phoned up they had one and it was£72. This was the ordinary model, no fancy light save or CD picture printing. I queried the price as I had seen it on their online site for £52.99. I was told that the High Street price (Curry's, which is Dixons) was £79 and so they were cheaper which they always claimed to be. When I went into Curry's at Cribbs Causeway the identical model was £49.99. I spoke to Heathrow and told them this but they were not interested and said that was their price and there was nothing they would do about it..
This is a warning if you think you are getting something cheaper at one of the big chains at the airport. Check your prices first.

It has been like that for many years. I used to commute to and from the Netherlands around ten years ago, and seldom saw a cheap price in the Tax Free shops.

It's not really a scam - they are entitled to charge any price they want as long as they aren't deliberately giving false information. They are probably quoting the makers "suggested retail price" which hardly anyone on the High Street would charge.

Pretty much everywhere the Duty Free shops selling electronics and cameras have decided that their target customer is the bored traveller who wants some retail therapy to lighten the air travel tedium. They aren't at all interested in people who want to save money.

The only exceptions that I found tended to be old models that they wanted to shift to clear space for new ones.
