Banister and Spindles one more question :)

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2231635&highlight=painting+banister

Hi all
One more question...
My banisters etc are painted in Soft Almond satin wood and look lovely ( I must admit was actually quite surprised!)
Just wondered would you recommend I add a coat of varnish? mainly for the hand rail actually
Thanks for all your advice so far :)

When I stripped the horrible dark orangey varnish off our bannisters, I varnished the handrail in a lovely oak colour and painted the rest (spindles, etc) white. It looks beautiful. Maybe you could strip your handrail and do something similar. Great for handrails as they experience more wear and tear, and keeps them looking good. (Stripping handrails is generally pretty easy - a heck of a lot easier than blummin' spindles!)

If you have painted the bannister with a waterbased satinwood, then yes, you could coat it a clear varnish for protection, but be better to use an oilbased varnish.
If you have used an oilbased satinwood, then you should be okay, as the oilbased is harder wearing and more ressitant to knocks.
The more coats of the oilbased satinwood the better, gives it extra protection.
