The thing is this garage is in the "good garage scheme" too and up until this time I had used them for about 2 years with no complaint. I am kicking myself about my niaviety.0

:rotfl:If you're not going to take action against them (which I don't think is likely to achieve anything anyway) you might want to name and shame the garage (name, address, phone number etc) so this post is available for anyone searching for it on Google and they know to avoid that garage.
Is this normal for this site?
How much do you think a 6 year old Yaris with a broken engine is worth? as per the original post it wasn't even the Garage that offered the money nor brought the car they just put here in touch with a buyer.
They give their opinion that the car was beyond economical repair, they didnt hold the car to ransom.
The person who fixed the car probably used a second hand unwarranted engine from a scrap yard, do you expect a garage to source in that manner?
They would have need at least a re conned engine with at least a 12month warranty0 -
That gives you an avenue of complaint. They may lose their membership. I believe you can also leave reviews on the good garage scheme website. The thing is this garage is in the "good garage scheme" too and up until this time I had used them for about 2 years with no complaint. If you do go that route you'll have to let us know the outcome and if you submit a review whether they put negative reviews on the website. If they don't allow negative comments then that brings the whole scheme into question and I think it deserves some special attention.0 -
Spurred on by the costly replacement car I currently have I'm wondering if the garage treated me fairly a few months back and wondered what peoples opinions are on this:
The garage checked the car over and told us that the engine had gone, and when asked how much it would cost to replace the engine we were told it wasn't really worth it and that replacement engines were very hard to get a hold of.
After about a week the garage called to say that the car needed moving. We mentioned about not having means to remove it and they recommened a Scrap dealer to sell the car to. We were given £200 for the car, we were then called by the garage to ask for the tax disc back that was in the car (had just been retaxed, therefore 6 months of tax was on the disc) as they said that the £200 included them having the disc also. We weren't too happy, as far as we were concerned the tax disc had never been mentioned.
One day we suddenly got a letter from a man asking us about the service history of my old Yaris and asking if there was an additional key for the car. According to the letter this man had bought the car for his daughter and gotten my details from the log book. I was astounded to receive this letter and also annoyed as I thought that the car had been scrapped. I never got back in touch with this man (although on hindsight maybe I should).
Part of me thinks that I should put the matter behind me and forget about it but another part of me feels that the garage misled me, leading me to scrap my car when I could have tried to get it repaired.
Do you think that this garage was underhanded in dealing with this?
does make you wonder why the new owner wanted service history though... what is the point of having service history if it is a new engine?? did someone lie to him too?it's nice to be important but more important to be nice!! :kisses3:0 -
Actually you just made me think, someone asking for spare keys and service history could well be trying to increase the sale value of the car (service history and a spare key always help get you that bit more cash). If I had just bought a car I wouldn't be cheeky enough to ask the previous owner for a key and service history and if I needed a key would go get one cut/coded.princess_loki wrote: »does make you wonder why the new owner wanted service history though... what is the point of having service history if it is a new engine?? did someone lie to him too?0 -
I too am amazed you sent them the tax disc.
If you presumed the car was going to be scrapped, what did you think they were going to do with the tax disc.
What did they say that made you think they were going to scrap it.
Personally, all this thread is doing is winding you up. I would just forget about it and move on.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Because it wouldn't have been fixed with a new engine.
Far to many unknowns but:
This new owner used a 2nd hand engine and is now selling on, he will not state the engine swop.
or
This new buyer has no idea about the past history.
or
The car never had any major engine issue.
or
Who knows.
draw line. learn. move on.
PS How much did you ask for the keys and history?:)0 -
I suppose I never really thought about the whole tax disc issue until after the fact. Thinking about it now, why wouldn't the scrap dealer just take the value of the tax disc off the price he offered me?
Shamefully, I never replied to the new owner. Someone at work said I should have done as they deserved to know about the car, but I was so annoyed about the whole issue I couldn't bring myself to contact them (I know I'm a bad person).0 -

Why don't you reply to the new owner and tell them you didn't keep the spare key and service history because as far as you knew the car had been scrapped.

Personally i dont think the scrap dealer existed but you need to move on, put it down to experience and never take the word of one garage always get a 2nd opinion.
If you have a non running car you need to sell in future try the local car auctions they will put it through as a non runner.0
