If you want to deal with Abbey/Santander (and some of its products are good if not the bank are good) then the best thing to do is to research the product yourself and apply at your local branch where some of the staff are good and you may be lucky enough to get one. If you get a dud you can stick the details of the product under their nose. Applying for anything centrally with Abbey means that you are very likely to enter a morass of delay and frustration.

... The staff in Abbey branches are good?

I still remember one day when I applied for a £600 OD in branch, and the lady literally fell about laughing saying NO rather viciously.

I asked her if she'd checked my account, she said she didn't have to. I pushed the point and she checked my account seeing that I was eligible for an £800 OD and a Mortgage...

... Suffice it to say I had a chat with the manager about that one!

  • just to add as i may have mentioned before i work for halifax on inbound applications line.
and in recent months there has been a lot of changes because of bcob as others have mentioned we also have to offer at least two products so the customer can make there choice as too what best suits their needs.

now im not a fan of this as it annoys people who know exactly what they want and you still have to do this.

as a plus side maybe in few years this will stop people writing on an internet forums they have been misold a product by bank staff. :)

I've posted elsewhere about how my experience with Santander has been pretty much spot on (it's a bank people, they're all f'ing terrible) in my dealings with them to date (18 months into our love affair).

Yet even I have had some pretty crappy telephone banking experiences from time to time. Like ringing up to request a re-issue of my telephone banking number as it didn't work....

Santander - Good evening Sir what can I do to help?

Me - I've got a few questions regarding my account and I need a new telephone banking number.

Santander - Ok, Sir you will need to hang up and redial entering your account information and your telephone banking number.

Me - I've entered my account information already. That's how I got to you. I need a new telephone banking number.

Santander - There is nothing showing on screen, you haven't entered any information. You need to hang up and redial.

Me - I've been on the phone for 20 minutes. Can we not just do security questions now and sort this out without having to wait on hold again?

Santander - I cannot do Security questions. You haven't entered any information.

Me - I did! That's how I got to you!

    Santander - No you didn't.

It was at this point I laughed and hung up....and yes I redialled. Ended up speaking to some nice chirpy bloke who sorted me out in five minutes...swings and roundabouts.
