Hi there,
Apologies if this has been asked before, but ive recently bought a Sandisk Cruzer 8gb flash drive so that i can listen to my music in my car. I thot it would just be a simple job of copying and pasting the playlists I have in my itunes into folders on the flash drive. That was no problem, but for some reason the songs in the folders have been rearranged in alphabetical order.
So my question is, how do i get the songs to be in the order ive copied them. Ive tried putting numbers next to the artist names, making smaller folders, but it still goes back to alphabetical which is a nuisance, because i have to flick through alot of songs to get to the ones i want to listen to each time.
Can anyone help? Thanks!

You're problem may lie in where you are renaming the files. If you rename them in the folder on your computer where they are located, usually My Music in My Documents, with a number prefixing them in the order you want them (rather than just renaming them in itunes) this should work.
You won't be able to drag a playlist over however, as they will be stored differently depending on how they are filed.Marketing and web design guy. FIRE enthusiast.0 -
Yes u right i did number them in the order they were in Itunes, and it still didnt work. It would be a mission and a half to number them on the hard drive where they stored. Is this really the only other way, i thought with technology being so advanced these days, that this would be a breeze to sort out.0

No other way really if you are using a standard cruzer drive as it's just a USB drive and has no way of managing your music files by itself. You could use a file renamer program, but this still may not help.
A Sandisk Sansa would be more appropriate for mp3s..? Possibly. I may be wrongMarketing and web design guy. FIRE enthusiast.0 -

This is very interesting. How do you connect a flash drive to your car to listen to music. I thought you need an MP3 player to be able to do that. Before doing something... do nothing0 -
Foobar can rename files from tags 1000 in no time, can also edit lots of tags at once.
So assuming you open a folder containing a playlist in foobar, just arrange to order you wont, wipe all track numbers from mp3 tags then tell it to auto sort track listing, this will number them in your order. Then select a tag like album and change all there to say playlist 1.Next choose file rename and choose album title - track no .
Repeat with playlist 2 and so on
If you have lots of unplaylisted music on there too, perhaps put the number before the playlist ie 1 playlist ,This should at least get them to the top of list.
BACKUP YOUR COLLECTION FIRST
Also do a few and test results
Foobar is not for the faint hearted (there forums will help though)
You will possably need masstagger and File operations and perhaps Quick tag also(These are all plug ins for foobar)0 -

I believe some cars have USB ports nowadays.
I've just ordered a new car and the stereo has a slot for an SD card up to 32GB which sort of make the six CD autochanger that's also included redundant. It's my problem, it's my problem

And it's my problem if I have no friends

Sorry i completely forgot i posted this thread
Ive still had no joy in rearranging the music files in the way I want, Im not very techie or at all I should say, so can I just ask what file renamer programs are or where I could get them? Or would it be worth bothering with, if it wont solve the problem?
Celler, thanks for your post, but I have no idea what you talking about!
You said Foobar would be best to use, but then also it wasnt for the faint-hearted, i dont think i would know where to start.
Lindabea, the car stereo i have has got a usb plugin that I can use to connect an ipod or a flash drive. Unfortunately mr man forgot to check if my ipod was compatible (it wasnt) before purchasing said stereo as my xmas prezzyIt is quite useful to use a flash drive (once u can master the song arranging) that way you dont risking forgetting ur ipod in the car and it serves as an external backup for ur music should ur ipod/computer crash.
If anyone does finally find a solution (or at least an easy one) to sorting out your music on flash drives in the order you want, please please let me know. The song-flicking is driving me maaad!0
