What's the best thing you've ever bought (or acquired) for old-style living that you couldn't live without? And where did you get it?

Allotment, council, £15 per year. Bargain.0

My breadmaker - I now wonder how I ever coped without it. I got it from my grandmother, who was given it as a present and didn't want it as she rarely eats bread.
The only thing better than a breadmaker is a free breadmaker!
:D Back after a very long break!0 -
I wouldn't be without my slow cooker. It turns cheap cuts of meat into lovely stews etc whilst I'm out at work doing a night shift.
One batch gives me one for today, one for tomorrow and several for the freezer. Saves on time and fuel costs.0 -
Pressure cooker.
But I agree with the allotment one, too (ours is £16/year)0 -
electric carving knife we got 29 years ago for a wedding present - cuts meat so thinly - no ordinary knife comes near it.0

LOL laptop here too, I suppose.

Actually, I nominate my slowcooker for best acquisition so far. I can cook four portions of stew and save quite a bit of money by buying cheaper but tastier meat cuts, and I use all vegetable bits and pieces that tend to lurk in the fridge.
Oh and vinegar...
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
