I realise you cannot speak for every library, but I was just wondering what you have to show to prove disability? Do you have to be on some kind of benefit? I'm disabled but not on a benefit.

I would really like to get some talking books, as I get really sore wrists and it hurts to hold books up, but love to read/listen to stories. I was just wondering if I would be eligible?

    Hi jazabelle,

Where I work we take people at their word, though this may not be the case everywhere. Besides, what is "disabled" in terms of getting money from the government may be different to "disabled" in terms of getting the most out of your local library. I'd definitely ask, we also offer talking books free to those that cannot read, so even if you can't be registered as disabled they may be able to allocate you to a different kind of concession. Good luck!

My DS also has autism and we have had formal diagnosis and DLA since last summer. Best advice I can give, is always ask - lots of people do concessions or free carer but don't promote it, and sometimes all the staff aren't sure of the deal. We went to a different cinema last week and got some money off, but I couldn't work out how they'd done it, it seemed like half price for DS,and it was all confused as we had also bought 3D glasses, and DS needed a wee as we were still working it out. So I went back to the desk after the show, spoke to someone else, who said it had been worked out wrong and gave us another £3 back.

We went to Legoland last year, and they were brilliant. We queued for about 10 minutes then a man who was working the queue told us just to go straight to customer services (no queue) and processed us straight away. All the staff were great when we used the exit passes. We used it at Disney too. Some people will make comments, but I've getting a much thicker skin!

In my area were have a group who is working with the council to improve access to services for disabled children, and they are doing great things, eg negotiating disabled swim sessions, and next week we are doing a cycle training which is free. Speak to your council about sport for disabled people, we go to a core stability group which is free.

If you haven't done so already, apply for a "blue badge" - regardless of whether you drive or not, it's great to be able to use the badge when you are in someone elses car and park in more accessible spots! Also, speak to your local council and see if they do a disabled bus pass (our council accept the blue badge as evidence of entitlement). Some will also do a "free" carers pass as well, although my local council run theirs from April to April and charge a tenner for it.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

Not every disabled person is entitled to a blue badge.

If someone has beena awarded DLA they are entitled to and will get a blue badge

The blue badge scheme details are sent out with the award letter for DLA
  • I have the CEA cinema pass which is great

Our local Sage at Gateshead do one free ticket when bought with a ticket for someone in receipt of DLA

Only the mobility component, not the high rate of care, and the local council have to assess you in other circumstances

  • A blue badge is only automatically awarded when it is the high rate of the mobility component of DLA. Otherwise, it is possible to apply to the council, which will assess your circumstances and may decide to send you for a medical.
