Best portable gadget to surf the web with?

I have a standard Nokia phone and a Kindle (not yet able to access the net in the UK). However I wish to be able to access the net via a portable gadget mainly to e-mail and google etc. Could anyone advise on what may be the best gadget - for instance blackberry, i-phone, i-touch, notebook - something else? I want to keep my contract with T-mobile if it is a phone option and also don't want to be stumped with some big monthly fees. The most important thing is widely avaliable net access - and fast service. Thanks

There's no such thing as "best" it depends on what you want to be able to do ("google" is far too vague) and how big a lump you are prepared to tote around to do it. As an example your list includes kit with screens ranging from a couple of inches to a notebook which could be well over a foot and they are designed with very different uses in mind.

Okay I was a bit vague - I suppose my web usage ranges from yahoo mail, running (as in the sport not managing) sites, internet banking, bbc news, wikipedia, MSE - quite standard usage basically. And yes I suppose I want a small piece of kit that would fit in a large pocket.

Having something small enough to fit in a pocket more or less dictates a phone type device and in the main they really are too small to handle normal surfing which is what your list amounts to imo.

If I wanted to do those things then I'd look to a netbook with a 3G mobile broadband dongle (well in fact that is what I opted for as it's what I'm currently using) but there is no way I'd call it especially portable - no problem carrying it around but you need somewhere to sit down to use it for instance.

    An iPad?

A bit big to fit in a pocket perhaps, though you can use one standing up. :p
  • There are lots of devices out there, for example I am typing this on my Toshiba TG01, but you might find a better web browsing experience on a netbook. I personally recommend something like an HP netbook, or if you are looking for portability, something like the Toshiba TG01 (which can be had for about £150 - the same as an iPod touch, but with a phone and larger, better screen)

It's the same as the iPod Touch, only totally different.

The wife has just bought one of these for working on a long commute. I was very impressed, for the price:-

It comes with a two year guarantee for that price and has 5 or 6 hours battery life. :)

Errr.... I meant price-wise. Install Opera 10 and you have a comparable surfing experiene to that of an iPod touch.

So, to summarise, you get a phone with GPS, 4.1" Touch Screen, Bluetooth, 3G, EXPANDABLE MEMORY, REMOVABLE BATTERY, and Microsoft's Windows Phone status amongst other features for the same price of something that does the job, but on paper has a lot less features.
