How much debt were and are you in?

I didn't mean any offence by "paid every penny" comment either. Bankruptcy route isn't easy or less stressful by any means, but some have no option but to go down the bankruptcy route,I'm pleased I saw the light before it got to that stage and nothing unexpected happened during the debt repayment years.
Sorry WASHER I didn't put my 'disclaimer' in as a dig at your wording - hope it didn't come across that way

Hi Dib-dab
i'm only 26 so although i feel my debt is probably pittance to alot of people's it's a lot for someone of my age i think
At it's highest i had about £18k now as it stands it's about 14k (and it's taken me years to pay that much off, what with only working at tesco's- now i have an office job payments are more and the total is coming down quicker) but it's still a lot more than i want to have lurking around
i'll be debt free in 2013 apprently but that seems forever away so i'm working on it to be sooner0 -

I'm 28 so know exactly what you mean about the debt feeling a lot for your age. I feel the same. Although I think my debt would be a lot for anyone's age! Well done on how far you have come though - already paid off £4k! It's now closer to £10k than £20k so must be a nice feeling already

Another 28 year old here!
At worst 4k. (2007) Now only my student loan to pay back which is sitting about £900.
Now I try to overpay on my new mortgage!
It wasn't so much the level of debt I was in but my lifestlye. If i hadn't sorted it out then (thanks to the very frugal boyf that taught me the error of my frivolous ways!!) I dread to think where I'd be now. Now I get excited when I hit my budget targets and can pay for things out of my savings.
Good luck on your journey, I find this site so helpful and useful:T0 -

I'm lucky i live at home still- but being debt free asap is my main objective so i can move out (even though i adore my family they are awesome) i should be being more independant
I can safely say though that even when i am debt free i'll still be living as i am ...on a budget, i don't think i could physcially relax my budgeting ways it's ingrained in me..... and i don't mind one bit i'm a budget geek it's a skill
I have respect for my money now and the way it's spent and that will always be with me now
Good luck to you :-) and to everyone trying to reach that debt free goal no matter what the sum of their debt it, were all working towards the same thing0 -
I joined this site on the 6th June 2007 and that day I added our debt up for the first time and was shocked at the total = £48006.32
Now Feb 2010 the debt stands at £20901.62 and we have less than 18 months until we are debt free. :j:jPay Debt by Xmas 16 - 0/12000

Hi Dib-Dab
First joined this site 18 months ago - joint debt with OH was £33,000
However, I gradually stopped posting and 'fell off the wagon' - lots going on, OH became my DH etc!
Back for good now tho! Joint debt stands at £32,459. Determined to be debt free by 1/7/14!
Good luck

i joined in Jan 06 and offhand cant remember exactly how much i was in debt but it would have been around the 5k mark
now im pretty much debt free (waiting on min payments to go to cards then im done) but i still have my student loan hanging over my head but i dont earn enough to start paying it back at the moment so its a low priority (old style loan)
learned a lot from here but i remember in around sept 07 taking out a loan to get a decent car and to also consolidate a bit of CC debt but i didnt learn, used them again, but hey its all gone now and now i can start saving for a house0 -
