usb turntable sound

Have just purchased a new usb turntable and connected it to my PC which is running Windows Vista. I have been unable to obtain any sound output from the turntable although I am able to record music from it, using Audio Cleaning Lab 2004, and playback after recording with media player etc.
Can anyone advise me why I can't listen to the music whilst recording, I have searched in the Sound Control box but to no avail - any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the sound control in Vista is like it was in XP, you may need to open the Advanced control panel and check that none of the inputs are muted or at very low volume, as the input source when recording via USB will be different from the source used when playing back from a file.
  • The sound control seems very different in Vista - I cannot find any separate inputs to enable or increase volume

Might be a bit of a "legacy" Issue but some cheaper soundcards aren't clever enough to accept input and play at the same time....

I had a sound problem with an internal TV card
Just couldn't get any sound until one day I right clicked in Control Panel / Sound then choose the 'Show Disconnected Devices' option and was then able to select the correct sound device
  • Do a search for your soundcard, and find out if it half or full duplex. If half duplex then it is not possible to record and play at the same time. If it is full duplex it will most likely be a settings or driver issue.
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!
  • Just done a search for my sound card - all I can see in the Device Manager is that I have a "High Definition Audio Device" attached but I can see no mention of half or full duplex ?
  • If you can find the full specifications of your PC, that should tell you which type of card is fitted.

  • PC is about 3 years old now - probably haven't still got spec - will have a look for some software that identifies all your hardware a go from there - thanks

My guess it that usb turntable is the audio device (it's a turntable with a usb audio interface* attached) and I think it will be very hard to have two audio devices, the turntable and the soundcard, handling audio at the same time if not impossible. I assume the turntable has a normal audio out and that is what you need to use to listen while recording.

*and that means it's the same as an extrenal usb interface which equates to a soundcard.
