  • Not sure what changing gas & electricity companies has to do with Dell, the computer manufacturer, but:

What they likely mean is you lack a sufficient credit rating. The deposit is to ensure you don't "do a runner", so to speak. This is quite normal with a variety of companies these days.

They are offering you unlimited credit facilities. A normal user can run up a bill of five or six hundred pounds over a winter quarter. By the time they react to a customer who doesn't pay a second quarter may have gone by. The supplier has very limited (and very expensive to other customers) means to recover any debt - they may very likely be only able to recover any debt at £3 per week for years on end. And all this is offered to you interest free.

A returnable (with interest) deposit of £100 is miniscule compared to what is being offered.

The security deposit is in exchange for the supplier granting you credit.

They'll only keep it for a year (assuming you pay the bills on time) and will even give you interest on the deposit - probably a lot more than you'd get from most banks at this time (since it's paid at Barclays bank base rate).

Engdel we are confused because the title of your thread is your name, not the subject matter as it should be. If you make the title relevant to your post you will get more responses, something like: "Failed the credit check for Scottish & Southern"
