Laptop, Toshiba - U300-13U
1x VGA output, no HDMI, no optical out etc. Just standard phone out next to mic input.
TV, Samsung 42" Plasma
3x HDMI in, 1x VGA in, plus the usual components in. An optical in present, was used when in the uk.
Av Receiver, Samsung HTZ-315R system, 1000w.
Optical inputs, as well as the usual Audio input.
A really small laptop that we bought for internet use on the move, but appear now that as we are overseas, we would like to use it to stream iPlayer etc as overseas TV is poor.
I think i already know the option. Its going to be a VGA cable to the tv, then a mini-jack to red/white phone lead into the Av Receiver.
Just wondering if there was any other way of getting the Video & Audio from the Laptop to the TV with an easier, higher quality connection in audio

What about something like this? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sound-Blaster-X-Fi-Surround-5-1/dp/B0019JDDC8/ref=pd_cp_ce_3
There are quite a few USB soundcards with Optical out.

Spot on Alias_Omega. A decent VGA lead and a minijack to stereo phono lead will do the job nicely.0

If you go the VGA route, don't forget to set the external out resolution to match the native resolution of the TV, or it will look bad.
Another option would be to get a separate graphics card with HDMI out to go in the laptop's Expresscard slot, though I doubt that would be cheap...0
