Conned by catalogue

I have a Littlewoods catalogue that I have had for many years and ocassionally order from. I have just found out that they have stopped giving commission to people like me who do not owe enough to pay a minimum of £20 per month.

Last summer I bought a bed for my daughter on a buy now pay later. The pay later came AFTER the new rule changes.

What I would like to know is - are they really allowed to no longer give me commission on something that was purchased when the commission was given (and advertised online). Didn't we both enter into some kind of contract ? I can not tell them that I now don't want to pay for it until next Christmas so how can they change the terms of our sale.

Would be interested on any views.

I'm sure they will have sent out letters explaining the changes..perhaps you ignored them?

Why not contact them explaining your point and ask for their comments?

Perhaps you could contact Consumer Direct,as it seems unfair, perhaps they have got the wording covered in the contract.
  • Thanks for your replies. I have emailed them and they have said "sorry" once and sent the new rules twice. Obviously, they are not interested.

You are right, they probably did send me something but that doesn't change the fact that I ordered the bed under the promise that I was going to get 12 1/2% of the value back to spend on something else, which I am now not.

Not sure why it only seems to be me that gets indignant about this type of blatant stealing by these companies. Superdrug added the VAT increase on to their products when they had never taken it off in the first place, and I cannot seem to find anyone else who thinks this is outrageous.

I think that is bang out of order on Littlewoods' part.
The Superdrug thing I can't get excited about as you would know at the time the price you're paying and if you can get it cheaper elsewhere then you have that option. But with Littlewoods it seems like you are now stuck.

There's probably a clause to say that commission is subject to change until the goods have been paid for, or something.
If this is the way they treat their customers, I'd pay off the bed when the time comes but other than that have nothing to do with them again.

You ignored the letter, your problem.

    Everyone is raising their vat.

You must have a lot of time on your hands to dwell over petty garbage like the above.

Depends on what the letter said. If they gave the OP the chance to get back to the position they would have been in (e.g. pay by such-and-such date to get commision) then that's fine. Or if the letter told them about the change before the bed was delivered then that's fine. But if it was just informing them of the change after the bed had been delivered then I don't see what the OP could have done differently by not reading the letter.

Harsh. 12.5% of the cost of a bed isn't particularly petty.
  • Was it really necessary to be so rude solodanceparty when you obviously had not read my comments properly.

    1. Yes I know everyone is putting their prices up, but most of them bought them down when the VAT went down. Superdrug DID NOT. They pocketed the VAT reduction then and are now pocketing another 2 1/2% by adding it to prices it was NEVER taken off of.

    2. Are you suggesting that had I read the letter I would have been able to choose to continue receiving my commission ? My comment is about the old rules applying to the old orders, not new ones - obviously I then have a choice.

As for time on my hands, which one of us is asking genuine questions and which one of us has time just to be rude. Maybe there is a clue in the screen name......

Basically, when the VAT rate went down, Superdrug put their prices up by around 2.5%. They are allowed to do this. Shops do it all the time.
Unless Superdrug tried to make out that they didn't do that, then I don't see the problem. Other than, yes, it is annoying when shops put their prices up.

    QUOTE]

Superdrug did decrease their prices after the VAT decrease. It took them AGES to do so- about 3 months IIRC.

They have increased their prices with VAT- althought I think the price has gone up a lot more than just the 2.5% VAT.
