Continue with Homecare 200 or not?
Options
Here is my dilema! It has come to renewal time for my British Gas Homecare 200. I called BG and spoke to an agent who advised me that due to the age of my Glow Worm Hide-Away boiler (12 years old) should it develop a fault and BG deem it to be beyond economical repair then they would not replace it. Would any of you know what the parts situation is like for a boiler of this type and as such am I likely to be in a situation whereby BG will say that it will need to be replaced. If parts are likely to be an issue for this boiler is there any point in me continuing with the Homecare agreement?

BG will not replace your boiler unless its under 7 years old and beyond economical repair.
If parts are becoming hard to come by cancel and self insure for a local guy or if it goes well just replace it.His Heart Proved He Was A RedSuarez, SuarezWe Bought The Lad From AmsterdamWe Know He's Not a Chelsea Fan.Fernando Torres = El Judas0 -
BG gave me a quote for homecare 200 yesterday for £13 per month only available on phone so they told me at that price, no mention of how old a boiler as above has to be although they did ask em how old it was. They said included was a annual service0

Homecare 200 is £17
Homecare 100 is £13
The First inspection is where BG check to make sure they can look after your boiler. If not any premiums paid wil be refunded. His Heart Proved He Was A RedSuarez, SuarezWe Bought The Lad From AmsterdamWe Know He's Not a Chelsea Fan.Fernando Torres = El Judas0 -

The thing is this! if parts are readily available then there is less chance (i think) that BG are going to say the boiler needs to be scrapped if it develops a fault. What I don't know is how long spares tend to be available for a boiler or what part in a boiler could fail that would be that expensive that BG might say that it is beyond economical repair. Also Homecare 200 does also cover all parts of my central heating so any problems with radiators etc are also covered. I do hear the self insure option of using a local heating engineer but surely if a BG engineer is going to tell me that my boiler needs replacing then the local heating engineer will do the same?!0 -
It is more a case of BG not carrying the parts in stock than not available.
I doubt if there is a boiler, produced by a main stream manufacturer in the last 30 years, for which parts are not available.
BG have a business model that(understandably) is designed to 'insure' low risk CH systems and not cover older systems without a 'get out clause'.0 -
It was definitely 200 they quoted me for £13 as I wrote it down when they tried to sell me it, she said it was only over phone and not online at that price, she was going to ring back in next day or so having had time to think.
I decided I wont because I heard on radio soon after that according to which magazine it said it still wasn't good valueGerrard_8_lfc wrote: »Homecare 200 is £17

IF it's 200 at £13 p/m then that will be the Flexi option, £50 fee for each completed repair. Also, did you actually ask the agent about replacement, as that's not a normal part of the selling script, the engineer would nromally advise you at the initial visit if parts etc. can be sourced, and if they renew each year they normally do their best to honour it.It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0
