DFW Noob wabts to switch providers

Hi guys,

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me.

I checked out energyhelpline.com to see if I could make any saving on my leccy and gas. According to the site I could make an annual saving of £476 a year if I switch to EDF.

So that sounds great and everything, but what happens if I have a balance with my current providers. I owe Scottish Power £212 and Scottish Gas £40.

Do these balances get transfered, or will the transfer not go through until I have cleared the balance??

Any help would be appreciated, I am desperate to begin my debt free journey!!
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

You would receive final bills from SP + SG soon after you switched, which would include those balances. They will give you a bit of notice (10 days?) before collecting the money by direct debit.

I believe you will not be allowed to transfer until you have cleared your debit balance.

From my experience there was no problem, but the Dr bal was under the monthly DD scheme which was u.t.d. Payment for balance was taken about 2 wks from changeover date.

Clearly you will usually have some form of debit balance(after final meter readings have been taken) on transfer date which you be required to pay to your old supplier.

However thats not what the OP asked. He owes £252(which could be more by transfer date) and wants to transfer that debit balance to his new supplier.

    I don't think that will:
    A. be allowed by his current supplier
    B. be acceptable to his next supplier.

I have certainly transferred when I had a large debit balance and I did not pay it off in advance. In fact, it took about a month after I had transferred for my old supplier to even bill me for it.

One thing is for sure though, no new supplier would take on a debt from an old account.
