Hi,
I hope you can help. I have a Toshiba laptop which suddenly won't log on. I use firefox but have also tried via explorer. I have Virgin cable with a wireless router.
I have logged on fine on this other laptop I have and my son is on it via his pc too.
the error message i get is a network cable is unplugged. I have restarted the router but still no joy.
can anyone offer any advice please?
many thanks

The network cable is unplugged message refers to the wired connection. If you are trying to connect wirelessly you need to turn the wireless on the laptop ad connect - maybe the encryption isnt working or something...more details are required.0

thank you scottishf,
I've gone into my connection settings and against my wireless connection a dialog box has come up saying that windows has detected an ip address conflict.
it says that another computer on this network has the same ip address.
I'm not especially technically minded and my son (who is much better than me) has gone off out with his friend!
what other information can i give you to help?Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -
restart your computer...it has the same ip address as another computer or device on your network0

it says that another computer on this network has the same ip address.
If it runs XP, then click start > run > type cmd & press enter > type 'ipconfig /release' then press enter and the renew the IP, type 'ipconfig /renew' (without quotes) and press enter. it should try and get you a new IP address from the router's DHCP server.
for Vista/7, then Start > type cmd into the search box and right click it > run as administrator and type the above command into the command prompt window and press enter.
edit - silly me!
ifconfig is for Linux, ipconfig is for windows 0 -
Hi, I am having the exact same problem (how bizarre). We run XP - when I did the "ipconfig/renew" as mentioned by gaming_guy, I get the message "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation".
It was working fine, the connection and signal strength are fine, just can't connect through either Firefox or IE0 -
you have to release the ip address before renewing it. same instructions only type in the cmd box 'ipconfig /release.
sounds like you need to put the router password in to authenticate for internet0 -

thanks for pointing that out
First you should run 'ipconfig /release' (without quotes), then /renew and it should renew the IP address
