ID for 9 Year old to go to ireland?

Im hoping to take my 9 Year old son over to Cork in ireland next month and just wanted some advice,

I have heard from the Ferry Company that we are going with that he will need some form of ID and if he does not have that at check in he may not be able to travel.

Is this right? i know you dont need a passport to travel to ireland but as children dont have any other forms of ID then a passport would be a must.

How long does it take to get a renew done on a childs passport as it is 4 weeks till we travel.

I just dont understand that kids have to have ID but i do with Adults.

I think the Post office is the quickest way for a Passport. I took my paperwork in and the new one came in 4 days. You do have to pay a little extra for the service.

Thinking about it, Ireland isn't even worth renewing a passport for.

Its an overpriced, over hyped, splodge of useless land in the Irish Sea.

I disagree with the above post, I went to Ireland last month and I loved every moment of it! It's definetely worth a visit, I really liked Ireland. I took the ferry from Pembroke Dock to Rosslare and I didn't use my passport but I had it with me just incase!
You'd love Cork, I spent way too many Euros though there :o
