Acer Aspire 5735Z - stupid horrible over-reacting mousepad

Hello Genius's

I have an Acer Aspire 5735Z which does everything i need perfectly. Not a single issue with it at all.

Except one

Thats so frustrating, I want to launch it out of the window every single day.

Basically the mouspad has the functionality that when you put two fingers on it and squeeze them towards each other, everything on the screen zooms smaller, and the reverse if you do it outwards. This is almost identical to the ipod touch/iphone option that does the same.

However, it is way to sensitive. It just goes off on one with barely the slightest touch.

My research so far has been:
  • Acer website - would only support US customers. Kept getting directed to PC World where I bought it from.
  • PC world - the guy was so useless I was scared to leave my laptop with them ("have you tried shutting it down and restarting...")
  • Changing mousepad settings - no matter how desensitive I set the options, it makes no difference (though the nomal mousey options become harder to use)
  • Acer forums - limited success here. Several people have said "Change the bios settings - this'll help", but they don't go into detail.
My problem is, I don't know how to change the settings, which ones to change, and what to change them to. I need a real dummies guide to changing the bios to stop this function.

I know changing anything in the bios shouldn't be attempted by anyone who doesn't know what they are doing, so I will pass on any posts to a computer literate friend.

Many thanks for your help in advance

Doubt it's anything to do with the BIOS.

What is the make of the touchpad - Synaptic?

  • I had a similar problem with my Aspire 5920. The pointer was jumping to the left but reducing the sensitivity cured it. I have to tap a little harder but at least it stays put.

Maybe you need an updated driver. Have a look in the Acer website downloads area.

You should be able to disable this "feature" (pinch zoom) - I did on my NC10 (which used a Synaptic pad) as it annoyed the hell out of me.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

Its a Synaptics Touchpad V7.2 - I'm looking through the options now for "pinch zoom" (or similar)...

Alternatively, don't put 2 fingers on it.

The problem was (hee hee was!) it was way too sensitive. Frequently, you would be dragging one finger as normal, release the single finger and then put it down again (e.g like when you have to go from the very top left of the screen to the very bottom right, you can't normally do this is one shot) - this it would determine was two fingers (even though it was one) and suddenly, everything was mega big, or mega small).

Hopefully this will help others as well - googling "Acer 5735z mousepad problem" brings this thread up first.
  • Glad you got it sorted.
