BArclaycard have just declined my DH's card in the shop. At the same time I received a call at home from their Fraud Prevention for him.
He was so embarrased and confused, it turns out that the purchase of a Sat Nav is out of our normal spending pattern (No Sh*t sherlock , we buy one every day!)and as such license to completely embarrass my DH and decline his card to check we are not fraudulent.
We are now without the protection on this item and have lost faith with Barclaycard. Now I am aware of the problem of fraud having had it happen with my Tesco credit card some 6 years ago, but do Barclaycard do this often as tbh I am going to the hairdresser tomorrow with a mum of my DD's friend if Barclaycard were to so something like this there - it would be around the neighbourhood in 5 seconds flat that we are in trouble, when infact Barclaycard are a pain in the !!!!.Surely a better way to have handled this would be for the credit card company to ask the assistant to ring a certain number for authorisation and my DH could have gone through security checks.
Why does everything have to be so blo*dy difficult! I know I am going to get the reponse well you wouldn't want a fraud would you - it is for your protection, but I want to know if this is common? Have you had this ? Are Barclaycard worse than others for this total embarassment factor.

I had this same problem with my Barclaycard at Christmas... declined at the bar.
Called them up there and then, they unlocked the card and it went through.
It is a pain, but it might be helpful to pop their 01 number on your mobile in case it happens again (01624663800)Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

I havent had this problem with my Barclaycard, but I did with my Barclay's debit card. Everytime it was declined for irregular spending I was shopping in my home town, they were relatively low value purchases and was happening every month for 5 months.
In the end I spoke to a manager in fraud prevention and asked if there was a sensible way around it, think they put something on about low value purchases in my home town, but whatever they did it hasn't been declined since0 -
Barclaycard and Barclays debit card have crappy fraud detection system.
I have literally been left hungry by these people - They managed to block both of my cards while I was in the US - For a half of a day I couldn't buy a sandwich or coffee. I felt like a homeless for a bit.
After spending like £20 on roaming charges waiting in the queue, they finally unlocked my card (I couldn't call them right away, as they work UK hours only).
For next 2 weeks my card worked on and off. I got refused few times at petrol stations and shops, but thankfully it's worked like a charm in McDonalds
Now I always carry my MBNA card as a backup. They offer no cashback, but their card works ANYWHERE ANYTIME!
One the other hand, I wonder what would happen if someone nicked my MBNA - they'd probably be able to go on a shopping spree, undisturbed0 -

Have thought this if we stay with them.0 -
I'm sure your frustration would be much more severe if it was a matter of their system not picking up a genuinely fraudulent transaction!Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

I had over £6K of fraud on my card and Barclaycard's system did not pick up a thing, it was so out of pattern it was unreal, 3 transactions for the same amount (Polish Airlines) and still didn't pick it up! I have a B'card for BT but have not used it anywhere else for ages.0 -
Yep I've found Barclaycard the worst for picking up transactions they think are fraudulent when to me, at least, they look fairly typical.
I think the only solution is to switch cards.
But I disagree with all this humiliation as word gets around thing. A big inconvenience, yes, and slightly embarrassing, yes. But it's hardly shameful - everybody knows people get cards blocked, forget PINs, stuff goes wrong. Doesn't necessary mean you are a menace to society and I'm surprised if people still think that way.0 -
Well as I say I have actually been a victim of fraud on another card, so I do know what it is like, however this transaction was in my home town and not IMO out of the ordinary for our transactions. I did say that I just wanted to know if this is Barclaycards way as when I did have the fraud with TEsco that was not the way they dealt with it.
I hardly think if someone had fraudulently got our details they would have gone personally into our local Halfords and bought a Sat Nav! When it did happen to me like mrbigd they bought electronics online from Canada! Despite having Canadian grandparents that is not exactly my typical spending pattern!! buying a Sat Nav from a retail park we go to at least once a week is!!0 -
I have a Barclaycard and booked a holiday on it at a branch of STA Travel - it cost £1000, definitely out of my spending pattern - but it went through no problem.
Seems to be pot luck whether a card gets declined or not!Sealed Pot Challenge Number 1225

I'm pretty chuffed with Barclaycard. Only had the card since December, and in addition to two balance transfers on opening the account, I've only made three purchases.
The other night I got a phone call to tell me they've 'safeguarded' the account, as someone has tried to change my address to one in London, along with changing the contact number and attempting to register an online account (which I already have). In addition to that this 'person' (for want of a stronger word) attempted to purchase £1201(?!?) worth of currency and a £2500 watch!
Thumbs up to Barclaycard from me! Fingers crossed they manage to nail who did it, not sure how difficult it would be, having only used it 3 times!0
