Money spend in store, back in account!

I used my maestro card (with Natwest) in Primark at the weekend, I didn't spend a huge amount, less than £20. The transaction appeared in my account online that evening as pending as is normal, but, on checking this evening the transaction has vanished and my balance is nearly £20 better off!

I've never had this happen before, would the money be taken out at a later date?

Yeah the funds will be debited at a later date.

It may have been because primark did not complete the transaction, Natwest have made the funds available to you again.

  • If you present your card and a charge goes through the system, the sum in question will ‘earmarked’ by the bank and gets deducted from your ‘available balance’, then when it is presented, maybe two or three days later, it gets deducted properly from your account.

If the charge is not collected within a few working days (maybe five or seven), the earmark will fall off, but the charge can still be presented at any time in the future (at least six months, if not six years later).

Like the proverbial bad penny, it will turn up: if not tomorrow, it will be next week or next month. Make sure that you have sufficient funds available. Otherwise you might go overdrawn and the bank will impose a bank charge.

Because this has happened to me on a few occasions, I've had to start writing transactions down. Yorkshire Bank only show the uncompleted transaction for about 48 hours.
